Dog Confinement Requirements in Elmore County
County Adoption of Alabama’s Dog Confinement Statute: Dog confinement is required in Elmore County because the Elmore County Commission adopted Alabama Code § 3-1-5, which requires that dogs be confined to the owner’s premises or kept in the charge of a responsible person if off-premises.
Confirmation is from coverage from WSFA and Alex City Outlook stating that the Commission adopted the law on Mar. 24, 2014, and can be verified on the County website: the Resolution is posted on the Dog Containment Law page.
On Apr. 11, I requested the Minutes to look for any context for the adoption, and Courtney Clements Lee, chief administrative officer, provided the documents on Apr. 14. The minutes did not include any discussion or other context for the adoption.
Dog Confinement Requirements Within Corporate Limits & Police Jurisdiction:
- Dog confinement is required by ordinance in Millbrook (§ 10-7), Prattville (§ 10-39, 10-41), Tallassee (§ 88-240), Wetumpka (§ 10-39, which also requires cat confinement).
- It is likely that dog confinement is required in Coosada, Deatsville, and Elmore Township, whether by ordinance and/or statute, however these municipalities do not appear to share their ordinances on their websites or via Municode and we have not yet confirmed whether a running at large law is in effect. Please email us if you can share information.
How to Report: See How to Report an At-Large Violation.
